Edinburgh Scotland

      December, 2009

Earlier this week, Mike and I spent a day in Edinburgh. Mike went to grad school there at the University of Edinburgh, and he wanted to show me around the city that he loved. It’s a labyrinth of narrow paths and hilly streets with spectacular medieval architecture. We spent our time walking around, enjoying the views, and sampling the pubs.

Here’s a random collection of photos from Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. I usually blog chronologically, but these pictures are in no particular order. Check back tomorrow for photos of Edinburgh in the nighttime!

I took this sunrise photo as we returned from breakfast, at 9:30 in the morning. The sun rises late during a Scottish winter solstice, and it looks like sunrise for a few hours.

I did some drive-by shooting of the snowy hillsides outside the city. I just loved the early morning light that lasted all day.

I couldn’t resist pretty Christmas decorations and some witchery.

I’m thrilled with all the sunshine we’ve had on this trip.

YES! I managed to grab a candid Abbey-Road-esque photo of these lads! I even got a blurred black taxi driving past, and a pub in the background. American tourist photo perfection.

The American tourist also loves castles.

These narrow allies were everywhere, and I took lots of pictures of them.

      Edinburgh Scotland
I drank a hot sloe gin with pomegranate and cranberry. I didn’t think I liked gin, but this was yummy.

      Edinburgh Scotland
It was frosty and cold outside!

I had no idea Edinburgh was so beautiful. Some of those shots look like something from a movie set, like the top image with the buildings all lined up. I guess it’s the way you’ve captured it but it really does look like an amazing place to be. Some places are just meant for Christmas, I think!

      Awesome Picture!

Whoa! Those pictures of yours made my eyes go happy – tears. Very beautiful scenery. The woman is pretty..it minds me of my wife..LOL…Thanks, I am looking forward seeing other photographs.

It looks stunniny – I’m still gutted that I never made it up to Edinburgh while I was at Durham.

Big thanks for your trip =) Pictures are very interesting

Oh, now I’m so nostalgic. I lived in Stirling, an hour’s bus ride from Edinburgh, for several years. I recognize many of the places in your photos and it gives me a pang. So beautiful!

Thanks for sharing your Christmas in the UK! It’s snowing again in Denver for the third time this week! Cheers, Kent

      so beautiful.

I’m not sure where that is, Dave, sorry! Not too far from the grass market is all I know… we got lost, just wandering around.

Where is 749246860_3g8xL-O.jpg (vertical shot before Cozy Christmastime pub)? I should recognise it but it eludes me…

I’ve been photographing Edinburgh seriously since the ’70s.
