Article in Popular Photography

I’m excited to be included in the current issue of Popular Photography! They interviewed me last month for an article on family portraits. They were particularly interested in the way that my portraits look composed but not contrived. They misquoted me (most of the quotes in the article are not my own words), and I’m not pleased with the way they cropped my photo, but still it’s great to be a part of the story. I’ve been published in magazines intended for brides or professionals, but this magazine’s mainstream appeal makes it a great addition to my list of publications.

Wow! Congratulations! :D
I get Popular Photogaphy, and I hadn’t read that article yet. I’m glad to see that your talent is being recognized. You’re the second person I know who’s been published in Pop Photo… one of the members of the camera club I’m in made the cover with a lily shot that won that year’s photo contest.

I am so proud of you! I need to run out and read the article!!! I was waiting for the day this would happen to you, because you totally deserve it. Ignore the misquotes. Editors do it all the time, they need to change and take credit for everything to make themselves feel special. It use to upset me when I worked in publishing.

Congratulations, Charlotte! It’s funny you mention the issue with the cropping. One of my photographs was used in a magazine and not only did they misspell my name, but they edited and cropped the image after I told them explicitly that they could not do that. Under copyright law, is it illegal for them to edit a photo, or by giving them the photo to use, am I also giving them permission to do whatever they want to it?

I’m sorry to hear it! I’m pretty sure magazines are free to do whatever they’ve put in their contract, as long as the photographer agrees to it.

Thanks, Thumper! The strange thing with the article is that they paraphrased everything I said, and then put quotation marks around it — even though none of it were actually quotes. Oh well, enjoy it anyway! :)

I read that article and I was like, WHOA, I know her!

How were you misquoted?

And sucks that they cropped your image. They prob wanted more space for the screen, I dunno.

The biggest misquote was something I never said: “‘I try to tease out character by prompting unscripted behavior,’ says Charlotte Geary.” I definitely don’t consider my strategy to be “teasing out character,” whatever that means. Instead I get to know people and learn what makes them click, and I try to make them feel comfortable enough to reveal that side of themselves in front of the camera.

The rest of my quotes are similar to what I said in the interview, but paraphrased and changed. It seems odd to me that they can put quotation marks around things that they phrased in their own words.
